I remember the first time I heard someone describe me as “smiley” I was actually kind of shocked. I guess I thought of myself more as someone afflicted with depression. Since I was nine years old I’ve been struggling with periods of cyclical depression. Sometimes the depression comes with panic and anxiety and sometimes it’s just an all pervasive sadness that settles in. And then there are the tears that flow from what seems to be an endless source. I always wonder when they’ll stop. Eventually they do, but just like a thunderstorm needs to pour every last drop of rain out onto the Earth until it clears, I have to cry every tear until my heart and mind settle. _ Depression is the soul’s cry, or at least it’s how my soul cries. There is beauty in tragedy, grace in loss and wisdom in sadness. I’m not afraid of it anymore. I know what to do to reclaim the peaceful center within myself. It just takes its own time and space. _ Every period of depression has also been an awakening. When I finally clawed my way out of the darkness again I brought a little more humor, a little more peace and a lot more love. _ So yeah, I’m smiley, but it isn’t because I’m always like that. It’s because I have consciously cultivating that happy feeling of celebrating all the little things in life like a blue sky, turquoise waters, a gentle breeze, a lightly scented flower, a perfectly ripe fruit, holding hands with your love, laughing with friends, and sometimes a moment of strength in a yoga pose. _ Peace is a choice. It’s not always an easy one. In fact more often than not it’s much harder than it seems.
