Privilege is not an easy thing to understand or talk about. If you’re someone who lives in the magical bubble where things just seem to happen you wonder why they don’t just happen for others. For those who have benefited from immense privilege there is a humility that comes from admitting that you didn’t just do it all on your own, that you had help and that even though you worked really hard, it doesn’t mean that someone else didn’t work equally hard or harder for much less. There is a conscious choice about whether or not you bother to take the time to understand the hidden and often systemic dynamics at play behind larger socio-economic patterns in society. And that’s just awareness. It requires so much more to actually effect substantive change. When power gets entrenched it is often self-perpetuating and increasingly more concentrated among the powerful. Those that have shall have and keep on having. _ I’m not an economist, but the question of privilege is a systemic one that is perhaps the issue of our generation. _ But what about privilege in the yoga world? You may be born with strength and flexibility, be photogenic, fit the mold of size, shape and color and have a financial safety-net. You, like me, are privileged. _ In the yoga world physical talent is almost a type of currency. So many people judge your qualifications as a yogi by what shapes you make with your body. It’s an unfair standard that I myself have benefited from. You may only be following me because of my physical form. Yet I know that yoga is a personal practice that requires years of introspective study. Some of the most learned yogis I’ve met are not necessarily the ones who photograph well. They may not get photographed or even have social media accounts at all. Inner peace is the real benefit from yoga. But inner peace doesn’t photograph as well as a handstand (I do realize the irony of this in the caption of a handstand pic). And in our algorithmic world, inner peace doesn’t generate likes or engagement, controversy and rants do. We must be strong enough to create a more compassionate world. _ Day 13 #upsidedowniscomingtotown @upsidedownmama @omstarsofficial @umstuff
