I realize that so much of my voice, my writing, my sense of identity has been about explaining, about proving my worth, about justifying why I have a right to do what I do, and I guess I have been finding my voice in a world that has never felt my own. I've never felt like the majority, and strangely I'm more likely to operate from the assumption that I might speak for others whereas I find few people who I can say really could speak for me. It makes wonder about who has the right to lay claim to a voice, a thought, a cause or a movement. I sit in a chasm, perhaps made by my sense of being a sort of outsider from childhood, looking different than everyone else where I grew up. Maybe this is the travel bug, I fled the suburban neighborhood of my youth to find enclaves of diverse people who were similar in their difference. So many more people in Asia pronounce my name correctly and see my Japanese origin. So many more Americans just think I'm guy (Welcome, Mr. Kino to your stay at the Hilton). All human experience is universal. To start off from any other assumption is just not morally sound. Make no apologies for who you are. Write, speak, dress, dance and sing for yourself, not to explain or translate yourself to someone else. Do not distort your truth, that you with your unique dream, your unique voice, are just as worthy and deserving as anyone else, that your story is captivating and worth telling. Giving voice to the aching tenderness, the burning pain, the soaring highs, the whole wonderful, awful, beautiful human experience is one of the most sacred and brave acts of sharing, communion and intimacy there is. I'd even go so far as to say that we each have a responsibility to find our voice and let it take the shape that is our destiny. ? . #practiceyogachangeyourworld #onebreathatatime ? .
