Being in India is not a vacation. It's yoga boot camp. I got up today before 2 am and I'll start my practice before 4 am. Yeah, I agree with you, it's totally nuts. I don't like it. You know what I like? Sleeping in. The beach. A big cozy bed. Sunset walks. I don't like sleep deprived practice in the middle of the night. Or maybe I do? Maybe I enjoy the challenge of it, the extremity, the purification. In Sanskrit this is called tapas, the intense fire that burns away impurities. And let's face it, if just went around doing only what felt good all the time we'd be in an unchecked world of pleasure, or even worse, addiction. There are people who say that yoga should always feel good and it should never be hard. In Ashtanga the tradition says that sadhana, spiritual practice, must have an element of difficulty and an element of sacrifice to bring up devotion. If it's easy, then it's the low hanging fruit of the inner journey. And it's when you get pushed to the outer limits that you expand and grow. It's when you're outside your cozy comfort zone that you grow. So I willingly submit myself to discomfort, not pain or injury, but certain sufferings (like practicing before dawn) along the spiritual journey. And I can say it has made me stronger, more patient, more tolerant, more forgiving, more kind. And I can say that there is some magic that happens in the early morning hours, like the spirit comes in and shines light through the body, turning the experience of yoga into a field of illumination. ? . #practiceyogachangeyourworld #onebreathatatime ⚡ .
