There is something so familiar about returning to India. It is a kind of spiritual home coming. I sit on the bed in a jet lagged stupor, breathing the dry dusty air, belly full of coconuts and a part of me relaxes. There is a place inside of yourself that you can find here in Mysore where you are what you are, neither running away from anything nor searching for anything. It usually takes a few days or at least a few hours of blank stares and soulful pondering, but then it comes, a dropping down of the nervous system that feels like the shedding of unnecessary layers, like taking off your winter coat to enter the coziness of home, like a long deep exhalation that comes with the sudden realization that you are finally relaxed, like a subtle shift that changes everything. I don't know when it happened but the things that used bother just don't anymore. I could feel the subtle shift after my first trip to India more than 17 years ago. Even then, one trip softened out my hard edges. And now after nearly two decades on consistent practice, I feel that the soft vulnerable place inside of my heart is actually the source of all the strength that I had been fighting for all along. It's not about putting on a good show, it's about being yourself and letting that be enough. Don't act the part. Drop the pretense. Let yourself go.
