Cruise with purpose to see the finless porpoises in the Seto Inland Sea 🚤📸

The finless porpoise is an animal crucial to the Seto Inland Sea’s ecosystem, included in Setonaikai National Park. These charming small mammals are called “degondo” by the locals, and they can be seen from cruises and ferries throughout the park. There are finless porpoises watching cruises around Suo-Oshima Island in Yamaguchi or Mikawa Bay in Aichi. If you are lucky, you can also spot them from a regular ferry near other parts of the Seto Inland Sea. 🐠🐋

Finless porpoises extend from the Persian Gulf in the west to Sendai Bay and Toyama Bay in the east, but their primary habitat in Japan is from the Seto Inland Sea to the Kii Channel. Their average length is 160–170 cm in coastal Japan. As their English name suggests, they do not have a dorsal fin. Instead, a ridge of 2–3 cm in height extends down from the bottom of their head to the tail. 🗾😀

Finless porpoises glide over the waters of the Seto Inland Sea almost year-round. Their density starts to increase in December and reaches a peak in April in preparation for the breeding season. Taking a cruise during this winter window will surely increase your chance to see these wonders of the Seto Inland Sea. 🗓⛴
