Yoshino, in the Nara side of Yoshino-Kumano National Park, has been considered a sacred place since ancient times. In winter, this World Heritage site is a calm contrast to the lively cherry blossoms and fall colors from spring to autumn. 🧣🧤 Encounter numerous shrines and temples on Mt. Yoshino that are well over a century old, including Kinpusenji Temple, the head temple of Shugendo, an esoteric religion founded in the 8th century. Zao-do Hall within the temple’s complex is Japan's second largest wooden structure after the Great Buddha Hall of Nara’s Todaiji Temple. 🏯 The Hanayagura Observatory at Mt. Yoshino provides gorgeous views of the snowy landscape with the impressive Kinpusenji Temple standing tall along the ridge. Only two minutes away is the serene Yoshino Mikumari Shrine dedicated to Ameno Mikumari, a female deity of water and safe childbirth who is believed to bestow fertility on those that pray to her. About ten minutes down the hill is Chikurin-in Temple and Garden. This complex features a beautiful traditional inn, a smaller temple, and a grand landscaped garden designed around 300 years ago by tea master Rikyu. 🌨📷 Although it is possible to see Kinpusenji Temple as a day trip, we recommend staying overnight in the area to experience all that Mt.
