In Japanese folklore, bats are seen as bearers of good fortune and prosperity, as they are a symbol of eternal youth and longevity! They even serve as the guardians of Amaterasu, the Shinto goddess of the sun. 🙏☀️ Around 35 bat species can be found from Okinawa to Hokkaido. Many nocturnal bats are agile flyers and skilled hunters, relying on echolocation to capture airborne insects like moths. However, with the exception of some species, flying foxes rely on sight to fly and feed on fruits and leaves. On Kuchinoerabu Island and a few other islands in Kagoshima's Yakushima National Park, you can spot Erabu flying foxes, which were designated as national natural monuments in 1975.
