Wildflowers bloom outside the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, California this April.

Growing up in Germany, I could have never imagined a sight like this—wildflowers stretching as far as the eye can see. Since living in Southern California, it’s become a bit of a ritual for me to photograph each “super bloom” in the spring. In part due to near-constant rain for the past week, these poppies and popcorn flowers sprung up by the thousands and blanketed the hills with a brilliant orange and yellow—a cheerful sight, especially given the current situation.
Please keep in mind that during the pandemic, many parks are closed. Be respectful of others (including the flowers—leave the area as you found it), stay on the paths and always, always keep social distance (wear a mask!). While the State Natural Reserve and the immediate area are closed, there are plenty of flowers in the surrounding region. If you photograph the blooms, a tip from my years of experience: remember to check the weather—poppies tend to be very finicky, and close with lack of sun or in windy/rainy conditions.
