Alluding to the millions of lives tragically taken in the Holocaust, light streaks seem to illustrate the ghosts of the past.
Today is the United Nations-designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day, falling on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial, designed by architect Peter Eisenman and engineer Bureau Happold, is officially known as the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It is a city block-filling maze of solid grey sarcophagi where visitors can find themselves sunk into lifeless canyons of grief.
