Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser (1928-2000), born Friedrich Stowasser, was a world-renowned eccentric artist, architect and environmentalist. An early environmentalist, he designed houses with grass roofs, undulating floors, and onion-shaped domes. In his art and architecture he used bright colors and organic forms, was fascinated by spirals, and considered straight lines ‘immoral and godless.’ As a young photographer still living in Germany in 1978, I collaborated with Hundertwasser on a magazine story and book project. I spent a couple weeks with Hundertwasser at his huge, rugged and remote property in the Bay of Islands, an area on the northeast coast of New Zealand’s North Island, where he lived a reclusive life in a small wooden home with adjacent shacks, surrounded by rainforest. True to his belief in organic shapes, many structures on his property were bursting with life—grass grew inside many of the shacks and even covered most roofs. Today, he would have been 91 years old.
