Inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, Ludmila is overcome by memories as she silently pauses on the edge of the bed in a small room where she used to rest between shifts while working in Pripyat’s Polissya Hotel.

Ludmila was one of the quarter million people who were evacuated and relocated in 1986 after the world’s worst nuclear disaster to date. Former residents of Pripyat are only allowed to revisit the Zone once each year—in the spring on Parents’ Day. As an alternative, residents can return as tourists, since tourism was legalized in the Zone in 2011. Due to the attention received by the incredible HBO miniseries, “Chernobyl,” there has been renewed interest in my project and book, “The Long Shadow of Chernobyl.” The recent exhibit of my Chernobyl images in Saint Petersburg, Russia, received remarkable coverage in the Russian media (including six television reports). @thephotosociety #Chernobyl #ExclusionZone #Pripyat #Ukraine #TheLongShadowofChernobyl
