This control room was identical to that of ill-fated Reactor No. 4, separated by a concrete wall only a few feet thick. In the early hours of April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 exploded when engineers botched a safety test, causing the largest nuclear disaster in history. Though universally condemned as unsafe, 15 such reactors still operated in Ukraine, Russia and Lithuania after the accident, including this Chernobyl Reactor No. 3, which remained online until December 2000—more than 14 years after the accident.
With renewed interest in Chernobyl caused by the recent HBO miniseries and Adam Higginbotham’s book, Midnight in Chernobyl, I have revisited this image, which reminds me of one of HBO’s scenes. In a memorable scene in the “Chernobyl” miniseries, an engineer in the control room goes into the hallway to smoke a cigarette. As you can see in this image, however, one of the engineers is smoking a cigarette inside the control room, which many did while I photographed.

lmstclaire I’ve been opposed and always will be opposed to nuclear reactors. Until humankind has the answers to how to deal with the waste, it’s a doomed energy source. Plus, really....why on earth would someone construct one on an earthquake fault line and then name it El Diablo!!!!

i_atm_i So interesting. I just watched the HBO series and was very impressed with it. So many things such as the miners assisting with the reactor that I had never heard about. How some of the workers and rescuers lived as long as they did after contamination is amazing.

y.vinn In Ukraine, all RBMK reactors were closed from 1991 to 2000. Now 15 more modern and safer VVER reactors are operating. Currently RBMK reactors (10 reactors) operate only in Russia.

gerdludwig @emilie_zeug This was after the accident; the explosion of Reactor No. 4 was in 1986. Still very interesting to be there only a few years after, as well as every time I visit.

barlow445 Your photos of Chernobyl are chilling. Just started watching the miniseries. Simply shocking and heart breaking. I watch in total disbelief.

shiinzhon @janetcu2 I though I lived further away from a nuclear powerplant than I actually did, this type of discussion is never pointless !
