Beneath the buttressed western wall of the sarcophagus—one of the shakiest parts of the enclosure containing the destroyed Reactor No. 4 in Chernobyl—a worker ducks into a small lead enclosure, provided to shield construction personnel from the radiation still leaking through the propped-up containment wall. These enclosures are provided to protect workers when they are resting and their presence is not required in the open space. I shot this years ago on one of my many trips to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
I’m looking forward to watching the continuation of the Chernobyl mini-series on HBO every Monday. It is an amazingly accurate and honest, in-depth account of what happened during the world’s worst nuclear disaster to date (yes, including Fukushima). @ナショナルジオグラフィック @thephotosociety #Chernobyl #Ukraine

Word Chernobyl echoes with extreme pain in the hearts of Ukrainians and other ex-soviet nations. Ukraine is beautiful country with great historic heritage. I wish that western people would associate Ukraine not only with Chernobyl but know more about our architecture, nature, art, culture.

Gerd, I’ve been following this show and one of the reasons I am following it is because of your photos. Still trying to find a way to purchase your book...

Wow - incredible shot. I hope you were protected as well! The HBO doc is amazing -- truly devastating though. Those poor people!

The show recreates the visual pretty accurate but tempers with the facts in order to fit the scenario. That’s upsetting 😐
