At 1:23 am on April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant blew up. The radioactive fallout spread over thousands of square kilometers, driving more than a quarter of a million people permanently from their homes. More than 100,000 people may have succumbed to Chernobyl-related illnesses. It remains the worst nuclear accident to date.

While the accident itself created chaos of apocalyptic magnitude, more than three decades later, tourists and guides are creating another bewildering disturbance even as they (naively) seek to articulate a deeper comprehension. Today, the most riveting attraction, the ghost town of Pripyat, bears less-than-honest witness to the disaster, as tourists hastily rearrange items—abandoned dolls, gas masks, furniture and more—in an attempt to form a haunting scene for the next tour group, or just to photograph themselves.
