Years ago, children in rural Germany dress in costume to celebrate Three Kings’ Day.

Three Kings’ Day, celebrated today, January 6, in many Christian households, celebrates the Biblical story of the Three Kings (or Three Wise Men), who traveled across the desert for 12 days to visit baby Jesus after his birth. In the gospel of Matthew, the Kings brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh—meant to be symbols of Jesus’ divinity and importance within the church and his destiny within the story of the Christian faith.

In different cultures, the day is celebrated through traditions like baking cakes, children receiving small gifts and participating in/holding parades.

Note: While this photo was taken three decades ago in a rural area of southern Germany, I would like to make clear that I do not at all condone the blackface pictured on one of the young boys. Especially through a modern lens (and recognizing white privilege), this practice is very wrong.
