Reminiscent of Grimm’s Fairy Tales’ Little Red Riding Hood, a girl in the Schwalm region of Germany pauses with her German shepherd in a nearby meadow during a break from folk dance performances.

Having grown up in the region, I remember a few of the village women still wearing the similar traditional local costume, specifically when visiting nearby towns on “official business,” or sometimes just to run errands. I even recall running into a woman dressed like this during a visit to my hometown of Alsfeld in 1989.

In support of my hometown, the region, local artists and the partnering organization supporting people with disabilities, I am participating in an arts/culture shop in which all goods sold are produced regionally. This photograph, along with several others depicting Alsfeld and the surrounding areas, will be sold there as small, signed prints. The shop, Markt 12, opens tomorrow, February 29.
