20 years ago today, February 19, legendary artist, architect and environmentalist Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser died at the age of 71.

In his art and architecture he used bright colors and organic forms, was fascinated by spirals, and considered straight lines, “immoral and godless.” He was known for his colorful, ragged dress code, generally wearing any of his collection of woven hats and consistently mismatched socks (image 2). I was lucky to photograph Hundertwasser early in my career at his sprawling, rugged property in the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, where I spent a couple weeks with him collaborating on a story and book project. His dream of living and working connected with nature was realized in his home there, which took form of a small wooden house with several smaller shacks, surrounded by rainforest. He was a man ahead of his time, with an environment-focused way of living and implementation in his art.
