Awed by their impressive surroundings, two young girls whisper in the foyer of the legendary Moscow Art (Mxat) Theatre.

As a young photographer, under Gorbachev’s initiation of Glasnost and perestroika, I photographed the Theatre’s productions, actors, staff and audiences.

Famous Russian actor Konstantin Stanislavsky and playwright/director Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko formed the theatre in the late nineteenth century, with the goal to make art and theatre-going accessible to the Russian public. Its first season included iconic works, such as those by Tolstoy, Shakespeare and Ibsen. Its productions shifted more toward that of Socialist Realism in the mid-1900s (to Stalin’s approval), but returned to Stanislavsky’s approach of naturalistic acting in the 70s, garnering more public appeal. The Theatre still produces plays to this day.
