Happy World Lion Day! The Asiatic lion's comeback is a real success story! Asiatic lions like this one @zoo_santoinacio once ranged from Turkey to eastern India, but the rise of firearms quickly led to this species being hunted for sport, putting them on the brink of extinction. By the 1890’s only 50 of these lions remained. Today, this number has increased to 500, thanks to the tolerance of local people who have learned to live near, and tolerate, these magnificent creatures which live in India’s Gir Forest. Today five protected areas exist to protect the Asiatic lion, and thought conflict with humans has been greatly reduced, the fight to save this species continues. Poaching is an ever-present threat, as is a lack of genetic diversity due to fragmented habitat that limits the species’ ability to travel and mate with lions outside of their inner circle. deborahgate19732847 It's nice to hear a positive story about saving an animal species that was close to extinction, unfortunately it's usually not positive news when it comes to this topic. Well done to the local people for all their understanding and work helping save these magnificent animals. It's very easy to judge from afar other cultures but their lives and livelihoods r very different from our own.
