Native to Australia, this saw-shelled turtle photographed @wildlifewarriorsworldwide spends most of its time near, and in, rivers and streams as well as connected swamps and lagoons. They are not usually aggressive, but as a carnivore this turtle has a fierce bite. The saw-shelled turtle feeds predominantly on fish, tadpoles, frogs, and aquatic insects, and is one of the few native Australian animals successful in preying on the cane toad – an invasive species that has wreaked havoc on Australia’s native wildlife. Toads too large to swallow whole are first shredded with the turtle’s front claws. #sawshelledturtle #carnivore #australia #photoark #savetogether

My introduction to issue re: invasive species was through the 1988 Australian documentary “Cane Toads”. Glad to learn that there is at least one native predator that can feed on them.

Well good to know there is one species that can take a bite out of the cane toad population in Australia.

Apparently then Australia needs a good healthy population of these turtles!
