Don’t worry, these Synodontis catfish aren’t dead - this species is actually known for swimming belly-up, earning it the common name of upside-down catfish. Synodontis is a freshwater fish that is most commonly found throughout Africa, occurring mostly in central and west African countries. There are more than 100 known species catfish that behave this way, all of which vary in both size and body markings. While some of these species are caught and used as a food source, many are prized fish in the aquarium trade because of their color and behavior. You can play a role in protecting these catfish by always doing your research before purchasing fish for your aquarium, ensuring that you are not contributing to the demand of this species’ capture and sale. @jasmine_sherriff I know many who sustainably collect and import species in the genus Synodontis. Of course there are people who abuse these natural resources for profit, but there are many in the aquarium hobby who get these species with the intention of raising them in captivity. That way, if wild populations of Synodontis go extinct, we have specimens in the hobby.

@joelsartore , many long years ago I had one or two these. Must have been 25 years ago. Had no idea of the issues back then if I had another tank, I would not have these. Thank you for all the info you give to educate us.

@jasmine_sherriff They aren’t hard to find in stores in the US and no laws against having them. I assumed they were captive breed; but that’s what you get for assuming 😕

I've got three species in my aquarium, such cool fishes! I know one aquarist that had kept a single synodontis in their tank for 42 years!!!!
