These fish may not look very large, but giant pangasius catfish can grow to be over 9 feet long in the wild, making them one of the largest freshwater fish species in the world. Found in the Chao Phraya and Mekong basins in Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam, this species inhabits large rivers and uses deep pools as refuges during the dry season. This critically endangered species is quite well-known, as the fishing of this species was traditionally accompanied by religious ceremonies and rites. The decline of this catfish is most directly linked to overfishing, but the construction of dams in recent years has also had a negative impact on already declining numbers. rachie_r8chie @upperclassarmz • I was wondering the same thing. I saw the story on how @joelsartore set up for many of his photos but this one i am guessing the catfish were not living specimens at the time.
