Want to help protect nocturnal fliers like this African wood owl? ​Turn off your outside lights before heading to bed! Owls are equipped to navigate and hunt under the cover of darkness, so by reducing light pollution, you’re making it easier for these birds to roam freely. The African wood owl feeds mostly on insects, reptiles, small rodents, and occasionally, smaller birds. Most hunting is done from a perch, with the owl watching its victim intently before swooping down on it. Like many owl species, the wood owl makes its presence known at night through vocalizations that echo through the trees.
