The Texas horned lizard is arguably the most iconic reptile in the Lone Star State. Once abundant, today horned lizard populations have declined as a result of habitat loss, pesticide use, and invasive red fire ants. Thankfully, suitable habitat still exists in Texas where horned lizards may be reintroduced, and many landowners have adopted land management practices that would help support the species’ recovery. @sanantoniozoo, where this photo was taken, launched a Texas Horned Lizard Reintroduction Project in 2016 aimed at breeding and reintroducing this species to the landscape for the enjoyment of present and future generations of Texans. #hornedlizard #hornytoad #Texas #nativetexan #reptile #reintroduction #PhotoArk #savetogether

We played with them when I was a child, considered them pets. They were so abundant it was rare NOT to see them in the yard. I haven't seen one for over thirty years now. I understand from cousins living near where I was raised that they are on their way back and that excites me! I am thankful to all who have facilitated this reinsurance. Oddly enough, along with the fire ants we lost another little critter, the large red ants that used to build huge round nests. A big area they cleared out on the flat ground and with a hold in the middle where they came and went. They were also quite entertaining until they bit you. Their bite was nothing like the fire ant though! We now live in Central Texas and the Fire Ants have marched upwards and are here and I am sure even a lot farther north. They are evil little devils that will eat anything, including your clothes!

Yes! I grew up watching & catching these guys on the playground in elementary school. Very cool lizards. Now I am a docent at SA Zoo & so proud of our progress to breed & reintroduce to the wild!

When I was a kid, in the 80's, we'd run in front of the lawn mower to make sure Dad didn't kill them. We "saved" 10 a time, sometimes more. I haven't seen a "horny toad" in 15-20 yrs.

Caught one of these when I worked for the Park Service in Del Rio, cute little buggers, I hope the zoo can successfully reintroduce them
