Despite what this species’ name implies, the Sulawesi bear cuscus is not a true bear - it is a marsupial! It uses its elongated claws and long, prehensile (grasping) tail to navigate the forests on the island of Sulawesi by slowly swinging from branch to branch. This species relies on trees for both shelter and food, with its diet consisting mostly of leaves, flowers, buds, and unripe fruit. One of the main threats to the Sulawesi bear cuscus’ survival is habitat loss due to deforestation and forest degradation, in order to make room for cocoa farms. @rainforestalliance has been working with cocoa farmers on the island to reduce this threat by introducing a way to grow cocoa under the shade of native trees.
