The zebra’s famous stripes are a form of protection from predators. When zebras are grouped together, their combined stripes make it hard for a lion or leopard to pick out a single zebra to chase! However, on the off chance that their protective stripes fail, this species also has a powerful kick that can cause some serious damage, and they can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour, allowing for a speedy get-away. The Chapman’s zebra is one of three zebra species - while this species’ population is currently stable, the same cannot be said for the other two, and all zebras are threatened by poaching because of their uniquely patterned coats. Protect species like the Chapman’s zebra by avoiding animal-skin products, ensuring that you are not contributing to the commercial hunting of this and other amazing species. I dare say this because I have lived in Africa all my life. It is unfortunate that some individuals have braught such a bad name to legal trophy hunting, but where i am at, hunting is the largest financial source backing the protection of many animals.

New research suggests stripes also act as an air conditioning system. Zeb can raise the black hairs whilst the white lie flat. Get a temperature differential and a convection flow of air, increasing evaporation so cooling beastie. Top Ass Fact.

@ucdaviscaes research revealed that flies find it difficult to land on zebra stripes, so much so, that when horses were covered in the stripes, they gained the same benefit—fewer flies.

Did not know that Grant’s Zebras were near-threatened status. 😢 They were everywhere in the part of Kenya I visited 20 years ago...
