When I first started practicing I used to think that the more advanced the asana was the more spiritual learning it held. It’s easy to think like that when you first start. The yoga poses are what often attracts people to the practice. I still remember seeing someone do a headstand and feeling like I wanted to learn how to do that. But the yoga poses are tools, not goals or ends in and of themselves. If you focus too much on the poses you risk creating a kind of rat race mentality where you try and collect more and more poses to be a better yogi. Equating spiritual development with physical proficiency can set up a hierarchy of extreme ableism that undermines the healing potential of yoga. It took me many years of practice to see through that illusion. _ Truthfully, I have benefited from this equation. In the world of yoga scholars and sadhakas, I’m no one and nothing. Yet people sometimes turn to me as an authority. I wonder if my writing and wisdom could stand on its own, if people would listen to me without having first seen me in a handstand or with my leg behind my head. _ A pose like Tree, Vrksasana, would not have inspired me before. But now I find depth and meaning in the healing power of the basics. Simple balancing poses offer so much grounding. Recently I taught an older man who was recovering from a stroke. The supported version of Vrksasana that we worked with to help heal was just as deep and powerful as some advanced asana. And, what’s more, his journey and his worth is just as valid as someone who is working on pressing up into a handstand. For me, yoga is about what’s in my heart. Yoga, and really also life, is a journey that I take hand in hand with God. _ Day 3 #onemillionyogischallenge is Vrksasana Tree Pose with @yogisoli on @omstarsofficial Join the challenge and help us raise money for @yogagivesback with @liforme @liquidoactive _ The more people who join this challenge means we can help give little girls in India a chance at a new life, ending generational poverty with the gift of education. Truthfully, I have benefited from this equation. In the world of yoga scholars and sadhakas, I’m no one and nothing. Yet people sometimes turn to me as an authority. I wonder if my writing and wisdom could stand on its own, if people would listen to me without having first seen me in a handstand or with my leg behind my head.
