I remember when the most controversial thing in the yoga world was whether or not you should hold your toe in Trikonasnana or not. A big part of me seriously misses those days. _ There was a time when I replied to alignment questions like that with definite answers. But now I believe there is a middle ground of human connection that is more important that any rigid rule in the mind. Whether or not you should grab your toe depends on your body, your mind, the practice, the day. You could focus on the side body stretch and avoid the hip, you could emphasize the pivot into the hip joint, you could widen the stance and deepen the inner thighs, you could work more strength or more flexibility, you could micro-bend your knees or straighten them, you could keep the hips entirely square, or something else altogether. It all depends on what style of yoga you practice and what works for your body on any given day—in other words, it’s contextual, like so many things in life and doesn’t fit into a black and white box of always and only. It’s Trikonasana, the Triangle Pose, but there are so many different ways to approach it, experience it, and practice it. What you give to your practice is what you’ll take away. What you emphasize is where your body will guide you. But remember even if it feels absolutely right today, it might change tomorrow and it might not work for anyone else. It’s Trikonasana.
