I love handstands. Not just for the pose but for the journey. I stepped onto a yoga mat more than 20 years ago as the weakest person in the room. I was an academic, an aspiring scholar, a debate team champ, not a gymnast, dancer or even very physical. Yoga spoke to me of the untapped potential of my body and mind. The practice opened the door to limitless potential. But first I had to stumble and fall more than a thousand times. Each time I landed on my butt after trying a difficult pose I got back up with just that little bit more strength and humility. I learned how to believe in myself against all odds and how to be strong enough to never give up, no matter how long it takes. _ But I also love handstand for the pure fun of the pose too. Handstands are really challenging for me. I never just “do” it, I always have to work extra hard to get and keep my lift ups. My traditional practice is my root and my center, my spiritual rock, my place of prayer. Handstands are my playground, my little girl’s heart that just wants to fly, even if for a few moments. And there is nothing closer that I’ve ever felt to flying than a handstand. _ Who should work on handstands? Anyone who wants to! You’re never too old.
