Here they come. The photographer @jonnotherattman is on the Upper West Side this evening watching as the giant balloons that will parade through Manhattan tomorrow come to life. The @Macy's Thanksgiving Day #Parade, which began in 1924, originally included a procession of live animals from the Central Park Zoo — yes, tigers and elephants roamed 34th Street. But the growls and roars of the live animals were said to scare children, so a master puppeteer was asked to design floating animals as substitutes. The parade first featured balloons in 1927, but the early inflatables disappeared during World War II, when the parade was postponed for 3 years, and many of the balloons were donated to the war effort for rubber. Tomorrow, parade goers won’t see any live animals — aside from a pet here or there — but they will get to see 16 giant character balloons and roughly 2 dozen small and medium balloons. #?
