The military campaign to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, is in its 6th week and bogged down in a grueling fight. Seeking to escape the fighting, more civilians than ever are taking the risk of evacuation. Billowing black clouds from oil wells set on fire by militants provide a dystopian background to the scenes of flight; it’s so bad south of #Mosul that the sheep there have begun turning black. Earlier this month, @sergeyponomarev photographed this family fleeing the fighting as oil fields burned in Qayyara, Iraq. @sergeyponomarev, a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photojournalist, and Tim Arango, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Baghdad bureau chief, are in northern Iraq covering the Mosul offensive and the intensifying humanitarian crisis surrounding it. Almost 70,000 people have been displaced so far. But the exodus is really only getting started. Visit the link in our profile to see more scenes of flight from Mosul’s front lines.
