Ayaan and Idyl Mohallim, photographed here by @leslyedavis, grew up surrounded by family in their grandmother’s home in Mogadishu, Somalia’s capital. “We’re American,” Ayaan said, “but Somali was our first language, and our years there are so vivid.” The twins’ grandmother taught them to cook, insisting that they help chop onions and garlic, and showing them to make spice mixtures from scratch. Today, for special occasions like #Thanksgiving, the Mohallim sisters, who live in New York City, make a glamorous platter of bariis iskukaris, basmati grains cooked in a rich, meaty stock and strewn with fried onions, raisins and peppers, or sometimes green beans. This Somali-style rice helps tell not only Ayaan and Idyl’s story, but the story of the United States as nation. What does #TheAmericanThanksgiving look like to you? Visit the link in our profile to get the #recipe for bariis iskukaris, and follow along this #nytweekender to see more holiday dishes that speak eloquently about U.S. families’ heritage and traditions.
