From the moment Dev Patel heard about “Lion,” a new film based on Saroo Brierley’s memoir, “A Long Way Home,” he was intrigued by its improbable story and conflicted hero. “Lion” tells the true story of a 5-year-old Indian boy who fell asleep on a train and ended up in Kolkata, thousands of miles from home. Lost and unable to tell authorities the name of his mother or hometown, he was soon adopted by a couple in Australia. “When I read the script, I was a puddle of tears,” Dev told @ニューヨーク・タイムズ. “I couldn’t believe this was a true story.” But getting the role wasn’t easy. Dev is known for playing an awkward teenager in “Slumdog Millionaire” — a breakthrough film that has worked against him. For the role of Saroo, the 26-year-old actor met with the director Garth Davis for 6 hours, plowing his way through every scene. After he got the role, he spent 8 months working with a dialect coach to recreate an Australian accent. He rode trains across India and visited orphanages. And he headed to the gym. @nathanielwood photographed #DevPatel in West Hollywood. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
