If Dharam Pal Singh really is 119, born on October 6, 1897 as his passport says, that would make him not only the oldest known runner in the world but probably the oldest man in the world. The problem is, many people don’t believe his story. Dharam, a cow herder in India, says he doesn’t have a birth certificate — they weren’t regularly issued in villages when he was said to have been born. He says he’s illiterate and doesn’t have a school certificate, either. Dr. Thomas T. Perls of Boston, a leading researcher on #centenarians, says that in his experience, “99% of all claims of being 115 or older are false.” He compared the chances or Dharam being a competitive runner at 119 to the odds of “building a rocket ship and going to Pluto. Inconceivable.” But Dharam told @nytimessports that those who accuse him of inflating his age “are jealous of my health, my age, my running.” He said, in summary: “My good health has become my misfortune.” @thefarvalley photographed Dharam jogging on a road that leads to his village in Gudha, India.
