Meet Captain Thomas J. Keating Jr., a member of the Sandy Hook Pilots Association. His job? Captain Keating guides about 150 ships in and out of New York Harbor each year. For more than 3 centuries, Sandy Hook's members have been rowing and motoring to climb aboard schooners and steamships and help captains navigate the confines of the harbor. In August, @jakenaughton photographed the captain aboard the Queen Mary 2, one of the world’s largest ocean liners. (Picture the Empire State Building turned on its side.) Having a person guide a ship in the GPS age might feel anachronistic. But the Sandy Hook pilots are more than valets. The natural depth of the harbor runs just 17 to 26 feet and, unlike roads, it has no stop signs. A harbor pilot’s skill is in knowing where ferries are going to turn, where sandbars may have shifted and where tidal currents are strongest, among other things. Visit the link in our profile to watch Captain Keating navigate the harbor in a 360° video. #Daily360
