A tree on the shore of Bolin Bay in the Great Bear rain forest, on the central coast of #BritishColumbia. Although the standoff at #StandingRock is the most visible sign of an emerging movement that is shifting the debate about the management of public lands, this large temporal rain forest has emerged as a laboratory for change. In the mid-1990s, indigenous people began protesting the clear-cutting of trees in the #rainforest. Conservation groups got involved, leading to a series of agreements that were capped this year. The agreement, signed between British Columbia and 27 tribal nations, protects much of the rain forest from commercial logging and shifts some management authority to the tribes. Like climate change itself, though, there are few certain outcomes. #regram from the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ staff photographer @fremson.
