Americans all come from somewhere. Parwin Tayyar and her family come from Dohuk, in northern Iraq. Before they arrived in the U.S. in the early 1990s, Parwin spent most of her childhood in a refugee camp. The Kurdish population of #Nashville, their new home, was already beginning to grow. Today, Nashville’s Kurdish community is the largest in the country. But for her #Thanksgiving table, Parwin is just as likely to prepare chicken and turnip greens as she is her mother’s version of eprax, a Kurdish casserole that includes grape leaves with other stuffed vegetables and a row of lamb chops running through the center. Either way, she smooths a tablecloth on the ground so that everyone can gather on the floor to share the feast. @nytfood asked 15 U.S. families to show us the holiday dishes they make that say something about their heritage. Their stories help tell the story of the nation. What does #TheAmericanThanksgiving look like to you? @leslyedavis took this photo of Parwin Tayyar while on #nytassignment in Tennessee. Visit the link in our profile to get Parwin’s #recipe for Kurdish #eprax, which is sometimes called dolmas.
