Americans all come from somewhere. Veronica Garcia’s mother was born in northeastern Mexico. Sometimes on Veronica's #Thanksgiving table there is arroz con gandules, rice studded with pigeon peas and olives. Her mother learned the dish from Puerto Rican neighbors in Chicago. For a while, there was pancit, a Filipino noodle dish, which her mother learned from a co-worker and then “Mexican-ified over time.” There’s always a turkey. There are always tamales. And there is always, always, she said, arroz con leche for dessert. The recipe for the light, creamy and sweet Mexican pudding belongs to her maternal grandmother. “Our Thanksgiving table is pretty traditional,” said Veronica, 40, who lives in Houston. “But I love that we serve things that reflect where we came from, too.” @nytfood asked 15 families to show us the holiday dishes they make that say the most about their heritage.
