Tater and Tot, the 2016 national #Thanksgiving turkeys, posed for photos earlier today at the @willard_intercontinentaldc in Washington, DC. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln spared a turkey from his Christmas table. But it wasn’t until the first President George Bush used the word “pardon” in 1989 that the custom formally began. Tater and Tot, both 18 weeks old, are new to DC; they were raised in Iowa. The @ニューヨーク・タイムズ photographer @al_drago wondered where the turkeys would stay before their big day. His search led him to the @willard_intercontinentaldc, a block from the @The White House. Here, it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to order their daily meal — ground corn and soybean meal in pellets — from room service. On Thursday, @Barack Obama will pardon the final turkey of his presidency. You can cast your vote for either #TeamTater and #TeamTot on Twitter. Maybe both will make it? #TurkeyPardon2016 #??
