@alessandro.grassani took this photograph in Alghero, a port city in Sardinia. This is the last place in Italy where people speak the Catalan language. But even here, the language is fading. Nearly a century ago, almost everyone spoke Catalan, according to a census conducted in 1921. Today, only about 1 in every 4 people speak it as a main language. The first Catalans reached Sardinia in the 14th century, when troops sailed from the eastern coast of what is now Spain. After an uprising, King Peter IV populated Alghero with convicts, prostitutes and other “undesirables,” many of them Catalans. Today, as people cling ever more tightly to national identity, the lingering use of Catalan in Alghero — locals call their dialect Algherese — is a reminder of the ways Mediterranean cultures have blended for centuries, making identity a fluid thing. And yet few seem to share the passion for rediscovering their Catalan identity. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
