As the war against ISIS intensifies, more than 3 million Iraqis — mostly Sunnis — are thought to be displaced. In Mosul — where the military campaign to retake Iraq’s second-largest city enters its 6th week — almost 70,000 people have been displaced so far, roughly half of them children. But the exodus is only getting started: There could be a million more people still in the city. Those who’ve been able to reach aid camps have received an initial glimpse of hope and relief. Some, like these displaced #Iraqis at the Khazer camp outside #Mosul, have found that aid workers and soldiers are quick to offer food, handing out cookies or Iraq’s traditional diamond-shaped bread. The photographer @sergeyponomarev and Tim Arango, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ Baghdad bureau chief, are in northern Iraq covering the Mosul offensive and the intensifying humanitarian crisis surrounding it.
