マリメッコ オイヴァシリーズのエスプレッソカップ＆プレート。カップはプレートの中心から少しずらして置くようデザインされています。個性がありながらどこか控えめな印象のこのカップ。ドット柄のほうは10年以上前から自宅にありますが、とくにデザインやプロダクトについて深くは考えず、お菓子が載るお気に入りのカップとして日常的に使ってきました。

このオイヴァ。カップ＆ソーサーではなく、カップ＆プレートと呼ばれる理由があります。古典的なソーサーの意味を見直し、オイヴァのような「プレート」が誕生したストーリーを、私たちなりに想像してみました。

Introducing the Oiva series espresso cup & plate by Marimekko. The design uniquely positions the cup slightly off-center on the plate, giving it a distinctive yet understated elegance. I’ve had the dotted pattern in my home for over a decade. Without much thought into its design or essence, it’s been my cherished cup for daily delights.

What’s interesting is that it isn’t termed a ‘cup & saucer’, but rather a ‘cup & plate’. This made me reflect on the traditional concept of a saucer and imagine the story behind this innovative ‘plate’ design.
