Before the pandemic, you used to dress to look good, put on makeup, and do other things so people see you the way you want to be seen. People trust you more when they can see your expressions and you look good.

Now that we are all stuck behind cameras all day, that stuff doesn’t work very well because webcams suck. Your friends and coworkers see you as a grainy, shadowed person. This isn’t about good looks. It’s about good lighting. We naturally trust people more when we can see them better.

The hack for this is to pay attention to the light you use. Whether you’re working, teaching, or interviewing online, good lighting is more important now than the quality of your outfit. The good news is that people who shoot videos for TV know all there is to know about using light to make people look good on camera. It’s an unfair advantage.

Professional lighting designer Christien Methot, who designs for international events and fashion shows, created @camerareadylights LiteBars you can use at your desk or home office space.

They’re easy to set up with magnetic snap-on tripods and come with a zippered travel case. I like that when I have to travel (even if it’s from my house to my home office next door 🤪) because it’s an efficient, lightweight and portable system.

@camerareadylights LiteBars are ultra-low-energy LEDs that emit the right color temperature light at the right angles for online meetings or even family chats. (And yes, I’m OK with these particular LEDs because you can dim them, and they are warm light.)

As always, I work to get you a discount on stuff I like and use. Good lighting should be affordable, which costs about as much as a decent shirt...but you use it every day. No washing machine required!
