It's late, I'm tired, and I don't like silhouettes. So I'll torture myself with one. When I first started working for @ナショナルジオグラフィック, I remember being told the magazine doesn't publish silhouettes. Fortunately, I never found anything compelling nor engaging about backlit moments. While leaving Sungsang Island by boat at sunrise, a man was standing on the docks while flags on boats waved in the wind. A boatman was rowing towards us, and we had to keep moving. In my head, those words kept coming…" We don't publish silhouettes, Stanmeyer." For a brief moment, I let the mantra go and watched his sarong move in the wind as we left the island, heading towards the Banka Straits off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia.
