One early evening walking along the concrete pier on the tiny island of Sungsong in Sumatra, an older man was sitting at the front of his home. Like yesterday's photograph of hallucinating colors, here too was a small warung (snack shop), selling mie goreng (fried noodles), tofu, and other easy-to-prepare meals. Back then, I wouldn't take such a portrait. Not because I wanted to be rude…I am asked such a request, unendingly, it had become distracting. He was so gentle and soft-spoken, I obliged his request and made a photograph, showing him the back of my camera and, unfortunately, having to keep walking towards the ferry boat that was about to depart. A few months later, it wasn't until going through the photographs, realizing all this greenness. How handsome he was seated upon a green plastic stool amongst so many muted beautiful colors of blues, burgundy, and wood. How this family, like all of us, had shoes scattered by the door. His orange peci with pink and red polka-dots, the same color as glass bottles of overly-sweet colorful sugar drinks, glowing on a table. Tonight is a straightforward photograph because I want to share something I learned that evening in Indonesia…since then, whenever anyone asks me, "Take My Picture!". Or “let’s take a selfie!". I do.
