One afternoon, while having lunch in a warung (small restaurant) on the island of Lombok, a man overheard a conversation between @wayantilik and me. We talked between spoonfuls of nasi goreng, obviously very excitedly after visiting the top of Mount Rinjani. This mystical volcano rose out of the sea many millions of years past, creating Lombok, one of the thousands of islands that formed from the aliveness of our earth that manifested much of the Indonesian archipelago. Curious about my arms-moving exuberance about mysticism, the handsomely slim, long-hair fellow came to our table, introducing himself as Ardenn. Sharing with him the story I was creating for @natgeo, he came to tell us how, on the following day, he was giving a ceremony by the Sindang Gili waterfall, to the sacred water that falls from the northern flank of Gunung Rinjani. Wayan and I waited at the waterfall that next day, wondering if he would show. A car arrived, and out walked Ardenn, wearing a black top, burgundy sarong, an udeng atop his head, and carrying a metal bowl. After pleasant greetings, he climbed upon a rock hewed naturally flat by water like an altar. Lighting incense, Ardenn went into trance-prayer, throwing offerings of rice to Rinjani while humming in prayer.
