If the world at night was filled with overwhelming colors (in nature, it is!), would we lose our minds or become filled with peace? When I arrived at this dinky store on Tanjung Batu island, a boy was sitting alone outside. He wore a traditional Javanese songkok (hat) and seemed so content. Behind him, in this small shop selling drinks and simple pre-cooked food, hallucinating colors were everywhere, I didn't want to leave. The woman who owned the little store in her home (called a warung) had different tones on every wall in bright-beautiful hues like a child would use with the cheeriest of crayons. Outside, she lit the house in blue and had the orangest chairs where earlier two people had sat for a cold drink. Moments later, a motorcycle pulled up with super-orange wheels. That evening in Sumatra in Indonesia, I felt so much peace in these irresistible colors.
