One of many beautiful offerings given during these days (months, soon becoming a year…) of Covid are those moments we go into ourselves and into the archive. Discovering pieces we've overlooked, neglected. This week I’ve returned to a story I did for @ナショナルジオグラフィック about piracy in the Malacca Straits. Yes, I met modern-day pirates, but I also spent time with ordinary people who live along the Strait that separates Indonesia from Singapore, and Malaysia. One evening when walking along the road in a kampong (village) named Mangundjaya in Komering, located in south Sumatra, I met Asmin. So sweet, she offered a cup of thick kopi (coffee) and told me the difficulties of raising a family in her village's lack of opportunities. When the sun set, she kindly excused herself and briefly went inside her home to pray. There's a beauty of prayer in all faiths. But in Islam and Sumatra, which is located along the equator, when most early evening prayers occur, there's a particular light in Indonesia. Becoming a most unique pelican blue. During the brief time, Asmin prayed while she faced toward Mecca in her white hijab within her greenish fluorescent-lit home, everything became enchanting. Brake lights from passing vehicles speckled the exterior in pale pinks. Two young men talked with me on blue flowered sofas just outside, and a family enjoyed the early evening next door. That moment at 6:16pm, like this evening wandering through the archive, became even more personal.
