Is Mexico Safe Part 2: Sayulita VS Playa and Tulum.

I decided I absolutely must report on this because of how drastically safer I feel here in Sayulita than I did in Playa!

So far the most danger I’ve felt is when doing things like launching myself in a swing over a rooftop pool, standing at the top and on the edge of a mountain, and walking through a crocodile infested jungle holding Oscar (apparently they eat dogs) to get to a secret beach.

I’ve walked solo at night and on the beach without any problems, have not been offered to buy drugs once, and there’s hardly any police lurking waiting to try and get a bribe.

It is most likely because Sayulita is very much an expat/surf town. And maybe also because there is only one cartel here versus FOUR in Playa. That’s only dangerous because they battle eachother, usually they leave foreigners out of it, but some have been caught in the crossfire.

Full honesty, I absolutely LOVE Playa and the entire Riviera Maya, but I actually opted not to go back there to live since I’m now solo, and it can be dangerous especially for women, but really for anyone! Taxis AND police will both rob you! If you’ve ever wanted to feel how it is for some people in the US to fear the police, just go to Playa and you’ll feel it too, but at least luckily there they don’t use their guns!

Anyway, I have a full safety tips post for Playa and Tulum that includes the numbers to the “safe tourist taxis” and also some reputable tour guides. I’ve been there solo multiple times so I’m not saying don’t go, just maybe consider going with a tour!

This all being said, in general, I think Mexico gets a really bad rep for being dangerous because of the lovely stereotypes the media and movies gives it. But, I actually feel safer where I am in Sayulita than I did in L.A.!

Oh, but full honestly again, as for 🦠 safety, that’s the only type where they’re lacking compared to Playa. Hardly anyone wears a 😷, so it’s up to you to wear one at all times!

Do you have any questions about safety in Mexico?? Or maybe how in the heck I pulled off posing while swinging 😂
